Meaning of Segilola (Yoruba name)

Naming in Yoruba land is one of the things we hold dear and as such, our names reflect how wealthy we are, circumstances surrounding our birth, things the parent of a child hopes for about the child’s future, our occupation, our family heritage and background, history about us and so on. Today we will consider a name called Sẹ̀gílọlá.
Sẹ̀gílọlá is a name coined from two major words.
Sẹ̀gí which is a type of bead in Yoruba land, it is very common and popular among the rich.
Ọlá which could also be best described as riches and wealth.
Combination of these two could be interpreted as Sẹ̀gí(which is a type of bead) is wealth. When a child is named this, the child is often compared to the bead, hence, describing such child as wealth or being wealthy.

    1. Thanks for asking, Abebi is a very special Yoruba name and conveys very strong meaning. Now let’s break the name down into syllables A/Be/Bi
      1. “A”in Yoruba is another way of saying “Awa” which means “We”
      2. “Be” in Yoruba means to “Beg”
      3. “Bi” in Yoruba means to “Give birth to or Birth”

Now let’s merge all this together as “ABEBI” and literally it means “We begged before we can birth this fellow”

The generally meaning of this is “We Prayed or Begged God before having this Child”

      I hope this suffice.
