Few days ago, I was having a chat with a teenage boy whose parents are of the Yoruba origin residing in Nigeria, in-fact they reside in the South-Western part of Nigeria (which is actually the Yoruba speaking part of the country). However, it sounds worrisome that this teenager couldn’t say basic sentences in Yoruba, as a matter of fact, he couldn’t greet properly. I’m also sure there are numerous people like this in Nigeria and not to mention those in Diaspora. Hence, it shows a decline in our love and respect for our culture as the western culture and ways of life is gradually taking over. This shouldn’t be and calls for a serious revival of our culture.
How to revive our Culture and Language?
- Making sure that this youngsters from childhood know that they are Yoruba by tribe, they should take pride in that and they shouldn’t be swerve by what they see on the TV, social media or what the westerners are showing us.
- Let them learn how to speak Yoruba language from their young age most especially as their first language at home, because definitely they will learn how to speak English Language in school.
- Give them Yoruba books to read: There are many Yoruba books that are interesting, that will help them learn and grow in virtue and character, also in doing this, it will help them to learn how to easily read and write Yoruba language
- Send them to go and see their grandparents once in a while, as they will learn how to speak better being around their grandparents.
- Get them a Yoruba language tutor to assist them to also learn how to properly speak the Yoruba language.
